Feeding a Hungry Crowd: Why Tacos Are Always a Winner

Life in my house is a whirlwind of activity, especially with four energetic boys and a loving husband. This means I’m constantly in the kitchen, experimenting with meals that are not only delicious but also healthy, easy to prepare, and capable of satisfying a lot of hungry mouths. Finding such recipes is always a priority, and I’ve discovered that nothing quite hits the spot like a hearty plate of tacos.

With football season in full swing, our TV is usually tuned to a game, and that means I’m often whipping up snacks and meals to fuel our cheering squad. We’re big football fans – my two older boys even play tackle football and absolutely love it! Among all our favorite game day snacks and family meals, tacos consistently rank at the very top. They’re universally loved, easy to customize, and perfect for a casual gathering.

Introducing Your New Favorite: Layered Oven-Baked Ground Turkey Tacos

Who doesn’t love a good taco? They’re perfectly portable, packed with incredible flavors, and offer that satisfying crunch from a crispy shell. While classic tacos are fantastic, my recipe for Layered Oven-Baked Ground Turkey Tacos takes everything you love and elevates it, making them even more convenient and absolutely bursting with taste. This isn’t just a meal; it’s an experience!

What makes these ground turkey tacos truly special is that they bake together, all on one pan. This not only simplifies the cooking process but also makes serving a breeze, especially when you have a large group of hungry people focused on a thrilling football game. No more juggling individual tortillas or trying to keep everything warm; these oven-baked tacos are designed for effortless enjoyment and maximum flavor.

Crafting Deliciousness: The Simple Steps to Perfect Tacos

Creating these delightful ground turkey tacos is surprisingly straightforward. The journey begins with a trip to your local grocery store. For me, that’s often Pavilions. I appreciate that they carry a wide variety of ingredients, including a dedicated section for all things Old El Paso, which makes my shopping trip incredibly efficient. For this recipe, I always make sure to pick up a box of Old El Paso Stand ‘n Stuff taco shells, some creamy Old El Paso refried beans, and a jar of their delicious salsa for topping.

I’m consistently impressed by the quality of Old El Paso products. They offer fantastic value, and stores like Pavilions frequently have great sales, making it even easier to stock up on my Mexican-inspired meal essentials. Beyond the store-bought staples, I gather the fresh ingredients for my ground turkey filling. The best part? Our homemade turkey taco meat is so flavorful, it requires absolutely no pre-made taco seasoning packets, allowing you to control the taste and ingredients perfectly.

The Heart of the Taco: Flavorful Ground Turkey Taco Meat

The secret to these sensational oven-baked ground turkey tacos lies in the homemade ground turkey meat. Unlike many recipes that rely on store-bought seasoning mixes, we build a rich and authentic flavor profile from scratch. Sautéing diced onions, green bell peppers, and minced garlic creates a fragrant base. Then, tomato paste and a generous amount of chili powder, along with a touch of salt, are stirred in, infusing the lean ground turkey with a robust and savory taste that perfectly complements the other layers. This homemade approach ensures a fresher, more vibrant flavor and allows you to adjust the spice level to your preference. It’s a simple step that makes a huge difference in these easy turkey tacos!

Assembling Your Masterpiece: Layers of Deliciousness

Once your ground turkey taco meat is cooked to perfection, the assembly process begins. This is where the “layered” aspect of these oven-baked tacos truly shines! First, I give the taco shells a quick pre-bake in the oven for a few minutes. This simple trick ensures they’re extra crispy and hold up beautifully under the weight of the delicious fillings, preventing them from becoming soggy during the final bake.

Next, the layering begins: a generous spoonful of warm, creamy refried beans forms the foundational layer at the bottom of each shell. This adds a wonderful texture, a rich savory depth, and helps anchor the other ingredients. On top of the beans goes a healthy portion of our flavorful ground turkey taco meat, ensuring every bite is packed with protein and spice. Then, it’s time for the fresh, vibrant toppings: chopped ripe tomatoes for a juicy burst of acidity, finely chopped cilantro for herbaceous freshness, and thinly sliced green onions for a mild, savory bite that adds a delightful crunch. Finally, a generous sprinkle of shredded Colby Jack cheese crowns each taco, promising a luscious, gooey, and irresistible melted topping when baked.

The filled tacos are then baked for about ten minutes, just long enough to heat everything through and achieve that irresistible golden, bubbling melted cheese. The aroma filling your kitchen will be pure bliss, signaling that a fantastic meal is almost ready!

Why These Oven-Baked Ground Turkey Tacos Are a Family Favorite

This recipe isn’t just easy and quick; it’s a guaranteed crowd-pleaser that your entire family will absolutely adore. The convenience of the Old El Paso Stand ‘n Stuff taco shells cannot be overstated – they stand upright on their own, making them incredibly easy to fill, arrange on a baking sheet, and serve without any fuss. This design is particularly helpful when entertaining or trying to get dinner on the table efficiently, especially for a game day spread or a bustling Taco Tuesday.

The harmonious blend of flavors and textures within these ground turkey tacos is truly impressive. From the savory, well-seasoned turkey to the creamy beans, crisp vegetables, and gooey cheese, each layer contributes to a truly delicious experience. These layered tacos offer a much more satisfying and cohesive bite than individually assembled ones. Whether you’re hosting a lively game day party, celebrating Taco Tuesday, or simply enjoying a laid-back family dinner, these oven-baked tacos are sure to be a hit. Don’t forget to elevate your game day spread even further with more incredible Old El Paso recipes and fresh ingredients sourced from your local Pavilions!

Tips for the Best Oven-Baked Tacos

To ensure your layered oven-baked ground turkey tacos turn out perfectly every time, keep these helpful tips in mind:

  • Don’t Overfill: While it’s tempting to cram in as much filling as possible, overfilling can make the tacos difficult to handle and prone to spilling. Aim for a generous but manageable amount in each shell to ensure stability and an even bake.
  • Pre-Bake the Shells: This step is crucial for crispy shells that won’t get soggy. Follow the package directions, usually just a few minutes, to ensure they’re perfectly prepared for layering and can withstand the moisture from the fillings.
  • Drain Excess Fat: After cooking the ground turkey, make sure to drain any excess fat. This prevents your tacos from becoming greasy and keeps the shells crispy.
  • Customize Your Layers: Feel free to adjust the toppings based on your family’s preferences. Black olives, diced avocados, a dollop of sour cream, or a squeeze of fresh lime juice can add extra dimensions of flavor and freshness.
  • Meal Prep Friendly: The ground turkey taco meat can be made a day or two in advance and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. This significantly cuts down on prep time when you’re ready to assemble and bake the tacos, making weeknight dinners even easier.
  • Serve Immediately: While they’re delicious, oven-baked tacos are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven when the shells are still crispy, the cheese is wonderfully melted, and the fillings are piping hot.

Variations and Customizations for Your Taco Night

One of the beauties of tacos is their incredible versatility! While our easy ground turkey recipe is fantastic as is, don’t hesitate to get creative and customize these oven-baked delights to suit your taste or dietary needs:

  • Protein Swaps: Not a fan of turkey? Easily substitute lean ground beef, shredded chicken, or even a plant-based crumble for the main filling. Each will bring its own unique flavor profile.
  • Cheese, Please: Colby Jack is excellent, but shredded cheddar, Monterey Jack, a spicy pepper jack, or a savory Mexican blend would also be delicious and change the character of the melted topping.
  • Add More Veggies: Beyond the standard tomatoes, cilantro, and green onions, feel free to incorporate finely diced red bell peppers, corn kernels, or even finely chopped spinach into your turkey mixture for added nutrition, color, and texture.
  • Spice it Up: If you like a little more heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper, a dash of hot sauce, or some finely diced jalapeños (fresh or pickled) to your turkey seasoning.
  • Different Shells: While Old El Paso Stand ‘n Stuff shells are perfect for baking and holding their shape, you could adapt this recipe for soft flour tortillas (wrap them in foil before baking for softness) or even crisp lettuce wraps for a lighter, gluten-free option.
  • Additional Toppings: Consider offering a spread of extra toppings on the side: guacamole, extra salsa, sour cream, pickled red onions, or a squeeze of fresh lime juice can elevate the experience.

Course: Dinner, Main Course, Snack
Servings: 15 tacos
Author: Jenn

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 1 green bell pepper diced
  • 2-3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/3 cup tomato paste
  • 4 tsp. chili powder
  • 1 pound lean ground turkey
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 16-oz can Old El Paso Refried Beans
  • 1 7.1-oz box Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff Taco Shells
  • tomatoes chopped, for topping
  • cilantro chopped, for topping
  • green onions chopped, for topping
  • shredded Colby Jack cheese for topping
  • Old El Paso salsa for serving

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the diced onion and bell pepper, and sauté until they soften, which should take about 5-7 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute or two until fragrant.
  • Stir in the tomato paste, chili powder, and salt. Add the lean ground turkey to the skillet, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Continue cooking until the turkey is fully browned and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
  • While the turkey is cooking, preheat your oven to 325ºF (160ºC). Arrange the Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells on a baking sheet according to package directions and pre-bake for 6-7 minutes, or as instructed on the box, to ensure they are crisp.
  • Once the taco shells are done with their pre-bake, carefully remove them from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. Increase the oven temperature to 350ºF (175ºC).
  • Arrange the pre-baked taco shells back on the baking sheet. Begin layering: first, spread a generous amount of Old El Paso Refried Beans into the bottom of each shell. Next, add a layer of the seasoned cooked ground turkey meat. Follow with your fresh chopped veggies: tomatoes, cilantro, and green onions. Finally, top each taco with a generous sprinkle of shredded Colby Jack cheese.
  • Bake the assembled tacos in the preheated 350ºF (175ºC) oven for about 10 minutes, or until all the ingredients are heated through and the cheese is beautifully melted and bubbly. Serve immediately with extra toppings like Old El Paso salsa, sour cream, or guacamole. Enjoy your delicious and easy oven-baked ground turkey tacos!
