Year-Round Grilling: Savory Teriyaki-Barbecue Pork Shish Kabobs with Kraft Sauce & Evergriller Mitt

Embracing the sizzle and smoky aroma of grilled food isn’t just for summer anymore! Even as winter chills the air, the allure of a perfectly grilled meal remains strong, especially here in sunny Southern California, where we’re fortunate enough to enjoy favorable grilling weather almost all year long. There’s something undeniably special about outdoor cooking, transforming simple ingredients into a feast bursting with flavor, a delightful escape from the ordinary.

For those of us who appreciate the joy of grilling, regardless of the season, the ability to fire up the barbecue brings a sense of freedom and culinary adventure. It’s not just about cooking; it’s about the experience – the anticipation, the sounds, the smells, and the gathering of friends and family around a delicious meal. This dedication to grilling, come rain or shine, truly embodies the spirit of an “Evergriller.”

Why Grilled Shish Kabobs Are a Year-Round Favorite

One of my absolute favorite dishes to prepare on the grill is shish kabobs. There’s an inherent charm in food served on a stick – it’s fun, versatile, and incredibly satisfying. These Grilled Teriyaki-Barbecue Pork Shish Kabobs exemplify everything wonderful about this cooking method. Imagine succulent, tender pork marinated to perfection, skewered alongside vibrant, crisp-soft vegetables like red onions, cherry tomatoes, hearty button mushrooms, and sweet red bell peppers. Each bite offers a delightful medley of textures and tastes, all harmoniously brought together by a generous slathering of rich, flavorful barbecue sauce.

The beauty of kabobs lies in their customization. You can mix and match your favorite proteins and vegetables, creating endless combinations. They’re also perfect for meal prepping, game day feasts, or a casual weeknight dinner. The grilling process imparts a unique smoky char that simply cannot be replicated by other cooking methods, elevating the flavors to another level. Whether you’re cooking for a crowd or an intimate family meal, shish kabobs are always a hit.

Discovering the New Kraft Barbecue Sauces

A truly great barbecue dish hinges on the quality of its sauce, and I’m thrilled to introduce you to Kraft’s newly reformulated barbecue sauces. They’ve genuinely elevated the barbecue experience! These sauces are crafted with high-quality ingredients you can trust, such as ripe tomatoes, rich sweet molasses, tangy cider vinegar, and pure cane sugar – notably, with absolutely NO high-fructose corn syrup. This commitment to better ingredients really shines through in the taste and texture.

The new line of Kraft Barbecue Sauces is available in an impressive array of eight distinct varieties, each designed to tantalize your taste buds: Original, Hickory Smoke, Sweet Honey, Mesquite Smoke, Sweet Brown Sugar, Sweet & Spicy, Spicy Honey, and Thick & Spicy. I’ve had the pleasure of sampling the Original, Sweet Honey, and Mesquite Smoke, and I can honestly say each one was a winner. The Original offers a classic, balanced barbecue flavor, while the Sweet Honey adds a delightful hint of sweetness, and the Mesquite Smoke delivers that deep, earthy, smoky aroma we all love.

What truly sets these sauces apart is their homemade quality. They boast a thick, rich consistency that clings beautifully to meat and vegetables, ensuring every bite is bursting with flavor. They are incredibly versatile, perfect not just for shish kabobs, but also for basting grilled chicken, slathering on juicy burgers, adding zest to ribs, or even as a dipping sauce. Servings: 10 -12 skewers
Author: Jenn

Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp. soy sauce
  • 3 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1/8 tsp. pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 pound boneless pork loin cut into 1″ cubes
  • 1 red onion cut into chunks
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes
  • 8 ounces button mushrooms
  • 1 red bell pepper cut into large chunks
  • Kraft Original Barbecue Sauce
  • wooden skewers

Instructions

  • In a medium sized bowl, combine soy sauce, olive oil, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Add the pork cubes to this marinade and refrigerate for 2-3 hours to allow the flavors to meld.
  • While the pork marinates, soak your wooden skewers in water for 20-30 minutes. This prevents them from burning on the grill. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
  • Carefully thread the marinated pork and assorted vegetables (red onion, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, red bell pepper) onto the soaked skewers, alternating for visual appeal and even cooking. Liberally spread Kraft Original Barbecue Sauce over the skewers, ensuring both the meat and vegetables are thoroughly coated.
  • Place the prepared skewers onto the preheated grill. Cook until the pork is fully cooked through and the vegetables have softened and developed a slight char. Continue basting the kabobs with additional barbecue sauce as they cook, using your Evergriller Grill ‘N’ Flip Mitt for safe and easy handling.
  • Serve these delicious shish kabobs hot, perhaps with a side of fluffy couscous or a fresh salad, and savor every mouthwatering bite!

Tips for Perfect Pork Shish Kabobs

Creating mouthwatering shish kabobs is an art, but with a few simple tips, you can ensure your grilled pork and vegetable skewers are always a triumph. Firstly, always remember to soak wooden skewers in water for at least 20-30 minutes before grilling. This crucial step prevents them from charring or burning over the direct heat of the grill, allowing your food to cook evenly. For metal skewers, this step isn’t necessary, but ensure they have handles that won’t overheat.

When assembling your kabobs, try to cut your pork and vegetables into roughly uniform sizes. This promotes even cooking, ensuring that your pork is tender and juicy while your vegetables are perfectly crisp-tender, not overcooked or raw. Don’t overcrowd the skewers; leave a little space between each piece to allow for proper heat circulation and charring on all sides. This also makes flipping much easier.

Marination is key for flavorful and tender pork. Giving your pork at least 2-3 hours in the marinade allows the flavors to penetrate deeply, resulting in a more succulent and savory bite. Basting with Kraft Barbecue Sauce throughout the grilling process not only adds layers of flavor but also helps to create that beautiful caramelized glaze, making your kabobs irresistible. Always remember to use a fresh batch of sauce for basting on the grill, separate from the marinade that touched raw meat, to prevent cross-contamination.

Finally, trust your Evergriller Grill ‘N’ Flip Mitt! Its protection will allow you to get closer to the grill, turning and basting with confidence and precision, which is essential for achieving that perfect char and even cook. Happy grilling!
