These crispy, sweet, and perfectly spiced apple slices are an ideal snack for any time of day. They require minimal effort and just a few simple ingredients, making them one of the best healthy snacks you can easily whip up. The best part? You don’t need a fancy dehydrator to achieve that satisfying crunch; your oven does all the work!

As the leaves begin to hint at their vibrant autumn transformation, there’s a distinct shift in the air that calls for cozy comforts and warming flavors. Even if the weather outside is still clinging to summer’s warmth, our cravings often turn towards the quintessential tastes of fall. We find ourselves dreaming of chunky sweaters, sturdy boots, and the irresistible aroma of cinnamon and spice filling our homes. This season inevitably brings with it a bounty of incredible produce, and none is more iconic than the versatile apple. Here in our home, apples are a weekly staple, vanishing quickly as my boys munch on them after school or find them tucked away in their lunch boxes.

While a crisp, fresh apple is always a treat, even the most beloved snacks can become a bit routine. Sometimes, we crave a little excitement, a new texture, or an elevated flavor experience to break the monotony. This is especially true when packing lunches or looking for that perfect pick-me-up during a busy day. So, how do you take a simple apple and transform it into something truly special and crave-worthy? The answer, my friends, is beautifully simple: homemade apple chips!

These oven-baked apple chips are nothing short of amazing. For years, I believed that making fruit chips at home required a specialized dehydrator – an appliance I simply didn’t own. But I’m thrilled to tell you that this is absolutely not the case! You can achieve perfectly crispy, flavorful apple chips using nothing more than your standard kitchen oven. It’s a revelation that opens up a world of healthy snacking possibilities for everyone.

The beauty of this recipe lies in its incredible simplicity. The prep work is minimal – mostly just slicing apples thinly – and the active cooking time is surprisingly low, letting your oven do the heavy lifting. As these delicate apple slices slowly bake, your entire house will be enveloped in the most wonderful aroma of sweet apples and warm cinnamon. It’s like bottling the essence of autumn and inviting it right into your home, creating a truly comforting and inviting atmosphere.

Beyond the delightful fragrance, the taste and texture of these chips are simply irresistible. Each bite delivers a sweet, crisp, and intensely apple-flavored experience. They’re so packed with natural sweetness and warm spice that you might even feel a little guilty, as if you’re indulging in a decadent dessert. But fear not! These apple chips are inherently healthy, made from real fruit with just a touch of natural sweetener if you choose. They are the perfect guilt-free snack to grab when you’re on the go, a fantastic addition to school or work lunchboxes, or simply a delightful treat to munch on while relaxing and watching your favorite show.

This recipe truly celebrates the flavors of the season, and it’s a testament to how simple ingredients can create something extraordinary. So, embrace the spirit of fall and let these homemade apple chips become a new favorite in your snacking repertoire. Get ready for your kitchen to smell incredible and your taste buds to sing!

Tips for Perfect Homemade Apple Chips Every Time

While the process is straightforward, a few key tips can elevate your apple chip game, ensuring they come out perfectly crispy and flavorful:

  • Thin Slicing is Key: The thinner you slice your apples, the crispier your chips will be. A mandoline slicer is highly recommended for achieving uniform, paper-thin slices. If using a knife, aim for slices no thicker than 1/8 inch. Inconsistent slices will lead to some chips being crisp while others remain chewy.
  • Choose the Right Apples: While Fuji apples are a great choice as mentioned in the recipe, other firm, slightly sweet-tart apples work wonderfully. Honeycrisp, Gala, or Pink Lady varieties are also excellent for baking into chips. Avoid very soft or overly tart apples, as they might not hold their shape as well or brown too quickly.
  • Even Spreading: Ensure your apple slices are laid out in a single layer on the parchment-lined baking sheets. Overlapping slices will steam instead of bake, preventing them from crisping up properly. Use two baking sheets if necessary to give them enough space.
  • Patience is a Virtue: The long, slow bake at a low temperature is crucial for dehydrating the apples without burning them. Don’t be tempted to rush the process by increasing the oven temperature, as this will lead to burnt edges and soft centers. The flipping halfway through helps ensure even crisping on both sides.
  • Cool Completely: Apple chips will continue to crisp up as they cool. If they feel slightly soft when you remove them from the oven, don’t worry! Let them cool completely on the baking sheet (or on a wire rack) to achieve maximum crispness.
  • Storage: Once completely cool, store your homemade apple chips in an airtight container at room temperature. This will help maintain their crisp texture. They can last for several days, though in our experience, they rarely last that long!

Flavor Variations to Explore

While cinnamon and sugar, or maple syrup, are classic and delicious choices, feel free to get creative with your seasonings:

  • Spice Blends: Add a pinch of nutmeg, allspice, or a pumpkin pie spice blend to your cinnamon sugar for an extra layer of autumnal flavor.
  • Vanilla Extract: Before baking, a very light brush of vanilla extract mixed with a tiny bit of water can add a lovely aromatic note.
  • Lemon Zest: For a brighter, slightly tangier chip, finely grate a little lemon zest over the apples before baking.
  • Ginger: A tiny sprinkle of ground ginger can add a warm, subtle kick.

Experimenting with different apple varieties and spice combinations can lead to a whole new world of homemade apple chip delights!

Ingredients

  • 2-3 apples thinly sliced (I used Fuji)
  • 4 tsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • real maple syrup not pancake syrup

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 225º F. Lay out the apple slices on two parchment lined baking sheets.
  • Mix together the sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. On one sheet of apples, sprinkle the cinnamon and sugar over the tops of the apples. On the other baking sheet of apples, spread the tops with maple syrup. (Can also double cinnamon and sugar and skip maple syrup or use only maple syrup – your preference!) Place both baking sheets in the prepared oven and bake for 1 1/2 hours. Flip apples over and continue baking for 1 more hour, until the apples are crispy. Let cool and store in an airtight container. Enjoy!
